Volunteer Emergency Rescue Unit
The unit is currently preparing to recruit more volunteers - more information about the unit below.
Eighteen months ago the Modiin Municipality began recruiting professional and non-professional volunteers as part of the municipal emergency readiness program.
This recruitment was carried out following a significant change in the national perception and preparedness for a crisis after the Second Lebanon War and Operation "Cast Lead".
This approach assumes that in the case of an emergency where rockets are falling in many areas or an earthquake hits large areas of the country, IDF forces, the Home Front Command and rescue forces will not be able to provide fast and full rescue services to a large number of areas. In these cases the municipality is required to function independently, provide services and support to residents without any assistance or support from professional emergency services.
To prepare for the event of this type, the Director of Security and Emergency Services in the Iriya, Shmulik Cohen, established a professional volunteer emergency rescue unit from city residents.
The unit will in practice be available for immediate response during emergency situations to carry out first response actions: fire-fighting, rescue of entrapped residents, first aid and clearup around the city until the arrival of aid.
Currently there are approximately 190 volunteers, constituting three teams, undergoing training and periodical refresher courses. It should be noted that that the unit also consists of professionals such as structural engineers, constructors, electricians, welders, and health care professionals who have an added value in an emergency.
